We know you’ve had a great time golfing with family and friends this summer. As we head into fall, a lot of activities start to wrap up and as the winter months near, you’ll likely find yourself putting away grills and stowing patio furniture in storage. Avid golfers may wonder about fall and whether it is the end of the golf season. The answer is a resounding no, but there are a few things to know for the fall season.
Frost delays
A common occurrence in fall is frost which can delay early morning events. While frustrating, it's important to remember that significant damage to the grass from driving or walking won’t properly heal until spring. So remember, even though things may be frost-free at your home, it doesn’t mean it will be at the course. Call ahead to check on conditions and see if there are any course delays.
Grass height
During the fall season, groundskeepers often raise their mowing heights slightly. This helps the grass to generate and store energy for winter. The higher the grass, the larger the surface area of the plant for growth. As turf growth slows during the cooler months, this added height will help turf remain playable.
Leaf cleanup
What grows out must come down. At least that’s the case with leaves. During the fall months, grounds staff will be diligently working to keep playing surfaces clear of leaves and fallen debris from trees. That can be a tall order depending on where the course is located and how many trees are on the property. You can be talking tens of thousands of leaves to keep after! So be understanding if there is some tree debris on the putting greens or if you have some difficulty finding an errant ball in a small pile of leaves.
Traffic control
As mentioned earlier, grass damage during this time of year is a great concern. With grass growing much slower, it is harder for it to recover from damage. Don’t be surprised if you see a few strategically placed ropes or traffic signs around keeping you from certain areas. You’ll be glad in the spring that extra steps were taken to protect course integrity.
Golfing can be just as good in the fall as it is in the summer. The cool crisp air makes for an excellent atmosphere to play a round with friends.
